Symposium: Developing the Critical Research Agenda

The first symposium of the Center on Health, Aging, and Disability featured a nationally known keynote speaker, lively panel discussions, and the announcement of new incentive grants.

University of Illinois Provost Linda Katehi welcomed the participants, acknowledging the Center and the College of Applied Health Sciences for their forward thinking in the area of multidisciplinary research related to health, aging, and disability. Keynote speaker Dr. Jack Guralnik of the National Institutes of Health discussed challenges and trends in setting a research agenda for these fields. Dr. Edward McAuley, UI professor of kinesiology and a member of the Center executive board, discussed the opportunity to integrate the study of health, aging, and disability at the University of Illinois.

Panel sessions examined research issues in three areas:

  • Chronic conditions and disability
  • Technology, health, and independent living
  • Healthy communities and well-being

The Center will support multidisciplinary research by providing incentive grant funding, facilities, and information. An incentive grant program was announced, which will include pilot project grants and grant preparation funding for more complex projects. The first call for applications will be in October 2008.

A complete agenda for the symposium can viewed here.
