Register now for CHAD Symposium March 13, 2009
Registration is now open for the annual CHAD Symposium. The event will be held Friday, March 13, 8:00 am – 2:00 pm at the I Hotel and Conference Center.
This year's theme is the Science of Behavior Change.
The event's keynote speaker is Paul Estabrooks. Paul Estabrooks is Associate Professor of Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise at Virginia Tech Riverside,
and directs the Center for Translational Obesity Research. Dr. Estabrooks works on topics related to obesity and society. He focuses on research that is
practical and can easily be moved into practice.
Other presentations will include Children's Health and Wellness, Managing Chronic Illness, and Health and Wellness Technologies. A poster session
highlighting health behavior research across campus will also be featured.
The event is free. A casual lunch will be served.
This year's Symposium is co-sponsored by the Health and Wellness Initiative.

CHAD website gets a new look
CHAD launched its new website last week. Our new format will allow us to post many more resources. For instance, you can now use our newsletter
archive to look for conferences, funding opportunities, etc. We will inform you as we add more resources to the site.

Upcoming Conferences and Training Opportunities
National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2020 meeting February 23, 2009
The Secretary's Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2020 will hold a meeting on the Internet on
February 23, 2009 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST).
Members of the public are invited to listen to the online Committee meeting. To attend the online meeting, you must pre-register at the Healthy People
Web site www.healthypeople.gov/hp2020/advisory/default.asp. There will be no opportunity
for oral public comments during the meeting.
Participation in the meeting is limited. Registration deadline: 9:00 a.m. EST, February 23, 2009.

Healthy People Sessions at Office of Minority Health National Leadership Summit, February 25-27, 2009
The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) will host sessions on the development of Healthy People 2020 during the HHS Office of
Minority Health's (OMH) Third National Leadership Summit on Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health. The 2009 Summit will bring together health
professionals and leaders to develop a national strategy towards health equity. The event will be held on February 25-27, 2009 in National Harbor, Maryland.

The Foundation Relations Office will host the second Working with Private Foundations seminar on March 31, 2009, 9:30-11:30 a.m. The session will be

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications that propose to develop, enhance, and validate translational tools to facilitate rigorous
study of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches that are in wide use by the public. This FOA focuses on encouraging the development of improved
research methodology to study safety, efficacy, and clinical effectiveness of widely used CAM approaches, such as: mind-body interventions, manual therapies, yoga,
and acupuncture. This FOA is not focused on the study of natural products, such as herbal therapies.

NCMHD Health Disparities Research on Minority and Underserved Populations (R01) RFA-MD-09-004
The purpose of this FOA is to support investigators whose current research focuses on disease/conditions that disproportionately affect ethnic racial minorities,
underserved populations, and rural and low-income populations. The research may include, but is not limited to, chronic diseases such as: cardiovascular, cancer,
diabetes, HIV/AIDS, infant mortality, asthma, obesity and kidney disease. Specific targeted areas of research also may include studies that influence health

This award is intended to support studies that make an important contribution to research and/or patient care in at least one of the congressionally

March of Dimes 2010 Research Program
The March of Dimes has released its year 2010 research program request for proposals. They invite all qualified scientists with faculty appointments or the
equivalent, at universities, hospitals and research institutions, to submit applications for research grants directed at the prevention of birth defects. Research
subjects appropriate for support by the March of Dimes include basic biological processes governing development, genetics, clinical studies, studies of reproductive
health, environmental toxicology, and social and behavioral studies.
Deadline: The online application process must be completed by April 30, 2009.

Prematurity Research Initiative (PRI) 2010 Program
The March of Dimes seeks applications requesting grant support for projects related to causes of prematurity. Research proposals of new paradigms based on
strong conceptual frameworks are invited. The intent is to provide new insights into the large, and increasing, proportion of preterm deliveries in which the
cause (and thus the means of prevention) remains elusive.

Funding opportunities from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Active Living Research
Active Living Research supports research to inform policy and environmental strategies for increasing physical activity among children and
adolescents, decreasing their sedentary behaviors and preventing obesity. Proposed studies must address one of the six topics identified in the call for
proposals. Dissertation awards are also available.
Target populations include children and adolescents ages 3 to 18, especially those who are at greatest risk for obesity, including racial/ethnic populations
and children living in under-resourced and low-income communities.
Key Dates
